What the cutting system actually does
In a film-laminating machine the cutting unit separates the film after it has been glued and laminated onto the paper or board sheet, and trims the composite to sheet. That cut determines three things: how fast the line can run, how cleanly the film edge comes off, and how gently the paper/board edges are treated. Hot knife and chain knife are the two systems used in automatic film lamination — and they optimise for different things.
How a hot knife works
A heated blade cuts through the film (and the glue line) in one pass. Because the cut is made by a single moving blade, the system is simple, fast and easy to keep in registration. Hot-knife machines run up to 100 m/min (compact models: 80 m/min). 1080-width machines add UPS-backed film tension control, a rotary disc knife for BOPP separation, and delamination for MetPET (optional on heavy-duty models).
How a chain knife works
A chain-driven blade travels continuously through the cutting zone. The motion is gentler on the paper/board edge — less crushing, fewer fibre tears on heavy or thick stock — and the system copes well with mixed sheet sizes and thicknesses. The chain-knife machines in our catalog handle BOPP, PET and MetPET films with servo-controlled overlap, individual temperature control for the drying chamber and laminating roller, and up to 8,000 sheets per hour.
Side by side
| Criterion | Hot knife | Chain knife |
|---|---|---|
| Line speed | Higher — up to 100 m/min (compact: 80 m/min) | Moderate — up to 8,000 sheets/hr in our catalog |
| Paper/board weight | Heavy-duty: 80–600 GSM; standard: 105–500 GSM | Handles heavier, mixed-thickness paper/board more gently |
| Film separation | Clean, consistent — built for BOPP/PET; MetPET delamination on 1080 hot-knife machines (optional on heavy-duty) | Good, with servo-controlled overlap |
| Edge quality on thick stock | Can crush fibres at the cut on heavy paper/board | Gentler cut, fewer fibre tears |
| Maintenance | Blade wear and tension system; UPS-backed tension on 1080 machines (optional on heavy-duty) | Chain and blade wear; encoder-driven activation |
| Typical fit | High-volume BOPP/PET lamination | Heavier paper/board, mixed sizes, edge-quality-sensitive work |
Choose the hot knife when…
- Your volume is high and BOPP or PET film lamination is the core job.
- Film separation quality matters (food and moisture-barrier packaging).
- You want maximum sheets/hr per square metre of floor space.
In the catalog: hot-knife machines for high-volume work — a compact model, 1080 model, upgraded 1080, dual-servo and heavy-duty variants.
Choose the chain knife when…
- Thick or heavy paper/board stock is a big part of your mix and edge quality is visible in the finished box.
- You run wide, irregular sheet-size mixes and want gentle, consistent cuts.
- You laminate MetPET or heavy BOPP where film tension varies a lot.
